A personalized serenade awaits us tonight -
yapping dogs, arguing neighbors, cars, sirens and more. Even small sounds can rouse light sleepers.
Some of us then take hours to drift off again - if we're lucky.
What to do? You can block the sounds with ear plugs. Or you mask them with a low-level background noise, of which there are two types -
White Noise - A noise that has the same loudness at all frequencies, such as static from a television
not receiving a signal.
Pink Noise - Like white noise but with variations, like the sound of waves on a beach.
Both noises occupy our hearing in a soothing way and effectively cancel out offending sounds.
