There have been scary stories online of parents who got overwhelmed and decided to give their children sleeping pills out of desperation and then something terrible happened. However there are also success stories of parents speaking with pediatricians and receiving natural sleeping supplements to help their child short term.
There are children who truly do need a sleep aid to help them finally hit the pillow and actually go to sleep. These include children with ADHD, Autism, Insomnia, Eczema etc.
Though if your child is healthy do not resort to supplements for bedtime. Instead help them learn how to sleep.
Take time to understand what is keeping your child awake.
- School Stress
- Wetting the bed
- Uncomfortable bed
- Snoring roommate
Once you understand why your child is having a hard time getting to bed speak with them to set up an individualized bedtime routine that will help them learn to put themselves to sleep.
Routines should obviously include the following.
- Brushing teeth
- Changing into Pajamas
- Going to the bathroom
Here are some other routines that can help your child learn to go to bed on time.
- TV off 1 hour before bedtime
- Read a book. If children are older choose a chapter book that the family reads one chapter of each night.
- Play a quiet game
- Talk about the day
- Check over homework
- Pick out outfit for the next day to have an easier morning
- Take a relaxing bath
